The chronic freedom series



The series of five books, chronic freedom, dirt, light, 3 books and Big Drug Factory – Unfound, by Scott Holmquist, represent a single work and unified attempt to survey, collect and interrogate traces of the histories comprising the back-to-the-land and marijuana production worlds as they evolved in Southern Humboldt County, California, from the late 1960s through 2010. The series edition is limited to ten.

2010 (prod. 2010 – 2017) edition of 30 (20 outside series)

19 ½ x 13 ½” – codex, hand sewn to polyethylene drip lines for cords. Tight-back covered and partially encased in calfskin attached to oak panels with titles of steel letters. In three of the book sections, fired bullet slugs have been set into niches carved into pages. About 1,000 pages (varying depending upon bullet-vault depth). Inserts include turkey oven bags, grocery bags and sections of a variety of soil and soil supplement bags. chronic freedom is offered only to approved collectors.     More on chronic freedom.

2010 (prod. 2009 – 2017) edition of 75 (65 outside series)

29 x 21 ¾” – codex, 40 pages (plus a 26 page sewn insert), inkjet-printed, color, on adhesive paper bonded to soil and soil supplement bags, cut opened into bi-folds and side-stitched. Hand bound to rusted ½” rebar spine and covered with tent canvas and pond liner scavenged from marijuana growing operations. The first 30 books are supplied in 31 ½ x 24 ¾ x 2" wood and canvas boxes. dirt is available to all collectors.     More on dirt.

2010 (prod. 2009 – 2014) edition of 50 (40 outside series)

28 x 25” – seven-page scroll. Silkscreen printed on foil acetate and ink-jet printed on Lexjet® terylene fabric sandwiched with reflective Mylar® and inserted into turkey oven bags. Hand bound to a custom armature spine and attached to two 1000-watt high-pressure sodium lights with glass bulbs broken away. Issued in box made of locally sourced and milled big-leaf maple, pepperwood and plywood, with a louvered ballast faceplate bent and fixed to the lid. Light bulbs and ballast faceplate were scavenged from indoor grow scenes. light is available to all collectors.     More on light.

All numbered light book scrolls are identical. All book boxes contain scavenged indoor-grow ballast face-plates and identical, locally sourced and milled wood varieties. The non-series boxes differ only by using plywood bottoms, instead of the coopered big-leaf maple bases of series boxes.

2009 (prod. 2009), edition of 10

26 x 9 ½” – 350-page codex, constructed from three trade paperbacks disassembled and made into one. Coptic stitched and cased in embossed leather with original paperback covers set into inner front- and back-covers. Issued in an armored-glass windowed 26 x 11 ¼ x 5” bigleaf maple box inlaid with madrone and pepperwood, with text giving material provenance silk-screened inside box cover. 3 books was held for release until late 2010. Big Drug Factory – Unfound


2010 (prod. 2010 – 2011) edition of 10

18 x 13" – 13-page fold out book, inkjet-printed, color, with a preserved original May 24, 1973 ed. of Rolling Stone. Presented in two archival-grade 4-flap enclosures with string-and-button fastenings sewn into folded book cloth, cotton twill canvas, tent canvas and leather binding. 2012 – 2015, ed. of 3, > 2,000 pages, inkjet and laser printed copy stock, 44 volumes, 12 x 10 ½”, bound in 1½" 3-ring, Evergreen binders with hand-stenciled spines. Contains the reference entries and "contact-sheet" prints of all pages and covers and containers of each Low Tide Archive object.

Launched 2011 and last modified August 2014, Holmquist designed the website with gliding navigation over a single collage. Documents from the archive merge with the collage when users select them.

Editons per colophon above. 48 pages offset printed with two color cover, 10 x 16cm (4 x 6 1/2") perfect bound. One German federal law to protect and promote the tradition and culture of rebellion in Berlin and other cities and areas of the Federal German Republic for the prevention and suppression of German authoritarian tendencies in government and business. The other to oblige random vacating of high-value city blocks to revitalise the culture and promote autonomous zones. Neither laws are still in force at the time of the future museum exhibition in the year 2968.
